The economics and the ecology of a reusable bag both depend on one thing: how long it stays in service. The good news is that non-woven bags are easy to care for, and a few habits will double or triple their working life. This is the care guide we give our own customers, for homes and for businesses holding stock.
Washing, the gentle way
Cool water, mild soap, soft cloth or sponge, inside and out. Rinse, shake off the water and air dry in shade, handles up so the bag keeps its shape. Heat is the enemy: no tumble dryer, no iron directly on fabric or print, no radiators. Laminated bags need even less: a wipe with a damp cloth returns them to service immediately, one reason grocery chains favour them (see our supermarket bags guide).
Stains and smells
Act early. Most food and dust marks lift with soapy water if treated the same day. For odours, air the bag open overnight; a light sprinkle of bicarbonate of soda inside, shaken out next morning, handles the rest. Never use bleach: it weakens polypropylene fibres and strips print.
Storage that preserves shape and print
- Store flat, folded along seams, or rolled for totes; avoid sharp creases across printed areas.
- Keep out of direct sunlight to protect colours.
- For garments, keep clothes in their breathable covers rather than sealed plastic, especially in humid months.
- Businesses: rotate stock first in first out, off the floor, away from heat sources.
When to retire a bag
Frayed handles, split seams or cracked lamination mean the bag has done its service. A bag retired after a hundred trips has still displaced a hundred single-use bags, which is the entire point made in our materials comparison. Replace it, and choose the next one using the GSM guide so it lasts even longer.
Frequently asked questions
Can non-woven bags go in the washing machine?
Gentle hand washing in cool water is best. Machine washing, even on gentle cycles, stresses seams and print. If you must machine wash, use a mesh bag, cold water and no spin.
How do I remove stains?
Treat spots early with mild soap and a soft cloth. Avoid bleach and solvents, which attack both the fabric and the print.
Why did my bag fade?
Prolonged direct sunlight fades most fabrics and inks. Store bags out of direct sun and never leave them on a car dashboard in summer.
How should businesses store bulk bag stock?
Flat or rolled, in a cool dry place away from sunlight, off the floor. Keep laminated and plain bags separated so surfaces do not stick in heat.
